No lightweight on the bottle and no lightweight in the bottle! On the label exiles Austrian Arnold Schwarzenegger, seen through the eyes of the great Austrian cartoonist Manfred Deix. This caricature has been published in his book „Die nackte Wahrheit“ – “The naked truth”. The contents of the bottle have also been made by an exiles Austrian – or in other words – a part-time Australian: Bert Salomon, who planted Shiraz and Co with his wife Gertrud in Finniss River South Australia nearly 30 years ago and established thereby SALOMON ESTATE. He had been the first in the 1980ies to import Australian red wines to Austria and had become deeply attached to them. Many years later both came back to Austria and took charge of SALOMON UNDHOF in Stein/Donau from Bert’s brother. They are leading this winery in eighth-generation. THE GOVERNOR originates from the small vineyard Finniss River on Fleurieu Peninsula. Nearby there is the ice-cold Southern Ocean which cools down the climate. But as the vineyard is 7 km away from the coast it avoids the salty sea breeze. Soil: glacial rocks, loam, calcareous terroir.
vinification: de-stemmed and crushed, fermented in open fermenters for 8 weeks, pumped over and punched down, then into barrels for malolactic fermentation, matured for 18 months in 300-liter hogsheads, French and American oak, approx. 10% new oak.
